Yet here we are right after Labor Day, contemplating another rash of tragedies in high school football. With those tragedies come another set of well-meaning people and communities wondering what, if anything, they could have done to prevent it.

Russell went 8 for 11 with 145 passing yards and three touchdowns in a 46-0 win over J.A.G. for their first region win of the season. The Wolverines have a chance to improve to 4-0 as they play against 0-3 Smiths Station this week.

Lance Vieira, the now-former head football coach of Littleton High School, was given a ticket on Tuesday for reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor charge. Littleton Public Schools confirmed this in a letter to the LPS community.
The ASWA prep committee's primary responsibilities include conducting regular top-10 rankings of a variety of high school sports, and select all-state teams in those sports as well. The committee will determine the winner of a variety of annual awards including the annual Mr. Football winner, and the Jimmy Smothers Courage Award.

While researching and writing a story on Champion in 2017, I recall being struck standing in Perry Cemetery at Champion's gravesite by the simplicity of the stone but the tragic gone-far-too-soon message it conveyed: "Vaughn M. Champion — (March) 4, 1910 — Oct. 5, 1928"
It was not uncommon for student-athletes of that era, Champion included, to play football without a helmet. There's no telling if the antiquated helmets of those days would have saved Champion. It might have not even helped much. But there is the clear possibility it could have — and obviously, safety has changed a great deal since then.
High school football has never been faster, stronger, more physical or more skilled. It is connected to the fiber of our country unlike any sport.
