While researching and writing a story on Champion in 2017, I recall being struck standing in Perry Cemetery at Champion's gravesite by the simplicity of the stone but the tragic gone-far-too-soon message it conveyed: "Vaughn M. Champion — (March) 4, 1910 — Oct. 5, 1928"
